Methanol poisoning is the cause of death for 44 Iranians and has sent hundreds more to the hospital. Citizens are drinking menthol due to false rumors that the alcohol will save them from the coronavirus. With the highest infection rate in the Middle East Iran has more than 8,000 people with the virus. The death toll stands at 291. Iran’s first reported case of COVID-19 was on February 19 however The Atlantic is reporting that “the official Iranian number is almost certainly an undercount, probably due to the Iranian government’s attempt to hide a desperate situation for which it is partially responsible.”
